Principal Consultant

Brian A. Carter, BSc. (Pharm), MBA

CEO and Principal Consultant at Apotheco Inc.

Brian established Apotheco in June 2021, after leaving his role as Vice-President for a digital health start-up. Apotheco was created to take a roll-up-your-sleeves approach to helping health sector companies tackle problems and/or opportunities to grow their businesses and provide greater value to patients and clients.

Brian has a natural curiosity for understanding and exploring how things can work better and uses a methodical approach to peel away the layers and uncover the true unmet needs and opportunities that challenge health businesses and their patients.

He is a registered pharmacist with 30+ years of experience in health and business, including front-line patient care and working with global pharmaceutical and health information companies, professional regulatory and advocacy organizations, and digital health companies. He has always maintained the importance of bringing value to patients through improved health system experiences and outcomes.

Brian has successfully carried-the-bag in pharmaceutical sales and was a Directors’ Award recipient for Merck Frosst Canada Inc. For his work in successfully navigating privacy legislation and helping to un-tap the value of health information, he received the IMS Health Summit Award. Brian served as an Assistant Registrar for the Alberta College of Pharmacists and was appointed to the inaugural Board of the Pharmacists’ Association of Alberta. He was elected by the Board to serve as the organization’s first President, subsequently receiving the Bristol-Meyers Squibb Past-President Award. Brian has successfully lead market access activities in Western Canada, working closely with governments and patient advocacy groups as well as serving as a Core Member in BC for Innovative Medicines Canada.

He provided consulting services to a Vancouver-based digital health start-up and eventually joined the company, becoming Vice-President responsible for business strategy, clinical oversight, and strategic accounts. Working with clients and the product software team, he specialized in the Discovery process to identify unmet patient needs and business opportunities.

Brian has extensive knowledge and experience in multiple disease categories including kidney disease, dermatology, MS, thrombosis, asthma, diabetes and Hepatitis C. He is currently working for a major client in tobacco harm reduction, and continues to seek new learning opportunities.

For the past several years, Brian has served as preceptor to student pharmacists in the UBC Leadership program. He continues to provide guest lectures at UBC on strategic thinking and planning.

He is a very versatile health system consultant with a large variety of skills and experiences to help identify and solve your small, medium, and large challenges in business and the health system.
